Even though I don't eat breakfast anymore, I do miss the taste of granola. I'm sure that down the road this old craving will die off, but for now I wanted to experiment, and we haven't yet attempted any granola recipe.
I stopped eating breakfast a bit before I went raw, because I noticed an interesting thing happening depending on whether I had food in the morning. On the days when I had breakfast (or any food whatsoever before lunch) I would be super hungry and all about food, barely waiting for lunch. I would also feel a bit heavy and sluggish. On days when I would have nothing but water until noon, I was not hungry, felt lighter and definitely more balanced, to the point of having a calm and collected awareness. I won't claim to have more energy, but I enjoy the benefits I mentioned.
I experimented a bit with eating/not eating, and on any
morning where I'd put even a drop of anything but water in my mouth,
I'd be "set up" for food. It's as if my vibrational state was lowered
on the spot - I was now tuned in to food, my digestive system was
activated and my stomach almost demanded something to work with. I
thought about the concept of "breaking the fast = breakfast", then I
read that the "normal" bodily operation goes through a 12 hour fasting
period - something like 12am-12pm, so I figured I won't fight my
biological schedule any more. In terms of yoga practice I was already
attempting to eat only between 12pm and 5pm. This is a great idea
except that I come home from work at 7pm
So back to the granola:I
used a recipe from Raw Food Made Easy For 1 or 2 People, it basically
calls for equal amounts of almonds, walnuts and sunflower seeds, plus
dates and a bit of cinnamon and salt. Once you pulse the nuts you add
dates, and they quickly convince all the nut dust that you created to
stick back together. I tried it with some cashew milk which was
hopefully still good after some days in the fridge, and it's really
good! The dates almost make it a bit too sweet. So I made some more,
formed it into bars and now I'm making granola bars! Despite
occasionally having some strange repulsion to dehydrated foods, I have
a great affinity for all things granola. I guess it's an animal
instinct to chew that I haven't quite gotten over yet.
