Taz - Master Cleanse - Day 4 March 5. 2007
My Weight - 124 pounds - 5.5 pounds less than day one.
Akom's weight - 136.5 - 1 pound less than day one.
So today was the first day Akom is taking the bus to work. The significance of this is that I now have to drive him to the bus stop 3.6 miles away and that he has to leave the house at a certain time or he will miss the bus. Unlike when he was taking the train, he doesn't have a choice and really needs to focus on getting up and getting all the things he wants to get done before 6:45am. Yes, there is another bus in case we miss it.
Personally, I think this is better. It is cheaper in so many ways. The bus costs $218 per month - 7.6 miles of driving/day so gas (if this all the driving this car gets) every 7 weeks - Estimated total: $230.50. The train on the other hand was - $207/month, 50 miles of driving/day so $100/month in gas, $65 parking/month, $42 in tolls/month - Total: $414. I think I'll be OK with the dropping him off and picking him up for a direct savings of $184 x12 = $2208/year.

My Weight - 126 pounds - 3.5 pounds less than day one.
Akom's weight - 138.5 - 1 pound more than day one.
So far my craving for food has not come back. I am hungry but that's it.
Also as other people who have done the cleanse have indicated, there is no weakness or lack of energy. I am also amazed because, I usually get hypoglycemic when I'm hungry and don't eat. That has not occurred. I can function till I am able to drink some more lemonade. We have increased our consumption to 7 glasses a day and have decreased the amount of maple syrup to 1.5 TBS. It was actually getting too sweet.
I did not take the tea last night or this morning, and I have not had to go to the bathroom either. I will give it today, and maybe start on it slowly tonight again.
So far with the exception of the physical detoxification symptoms the first two days, I feel good.
By the way, if you are interested in reading a side by side comparison of how the both of are reacting to this cleanse, please feel free to visit ourMaster Cleanse page.

Morning weight: 138.5
This is getting better and better.
I actually ran, worked out and felt just fine.
Started on lemonade around 11am (had the new senna tea first).
I have lots of technical stuff on my list today - setup a new server, move domains and apps between hosting spaces, configure things, buy hardware, etc. It's fun but it eats time like you would not believe.
I was able to become a little lighter sometime midday, though it was not without effort and some time commitment. Despite the time invested, the output was below average. I have no conjectures about reasons at this time. We'll just wait and see.
We took a break around 2pm and went to check out George Street Coop - a little store in New Brunswick that sells organic food (and you can partner with them too). We needed to buy lemons/limes anyway (10 days and 2 people call for a lot of lemons and limes). It's a really cute store and the food looks good, but they had no limes. So off we went to ShopRite - theirs didn't look too good so we picked out what we could. Eventually we drove past a farm market on Rt 18, and they had whatever we wanted! I have no idea if they are organic though. So now we are stocked for at least most of the remaining days.

My Weight - 127 pounds - 1.5 pounds less than yesterday.
Akom's weight - 139 - 1.5 pounds more than yesterday.
Interesting.....
It is the middle of the day. Yesterday, I went to bed at 5:00pm. I was so tired. I thought I was only going to take a nap and then Akom woke me up at 10pm for my tea!
So the tea is having a bad effect on me. On the directions it says to stop taking it if diarrhea or loose stool develops. Well, suffice it to say, I am going to stop taking the tea. The Master Cleanse, also says to stop taking the laxative if that occurs.
I have had to go to the bathroom 4 times today, and that is not including the two times I went during the night. Not pleasant experiences. I have also vomited twice. However, as unappetizing as all of that sounds, I do feel better. The tongue swollen feeling I had yesterday is gone.

Morning weight: 139
Got up fairly late, didn't go running as I got bogged down in administrative tasks - mostly domain/hosting/application related.
I wound up rewriting the story presentation engine, again - this time to generate a static site using smarty.
Had some of the tea in the morning, and started drinking lemonade around 11am.
The tea is quite effective, producing expected results. It's now 1.5 days since I've eaten anything solid and I'm using the bathroom as if there've been no changes in my lifestyle. I guess I've never really fasted for longer than 2 days at a time, so it hasn't occurred to me just how long it takes for food to work its way through the system... Or is it what I'm supposed to be getting rid of - the ballast I've been carrying for who knows how long?

Taz - Master Cleanse Day 1 March 2. 2007
So the big day has arrived. Today is the first day of the master cleanse.
Let me back up and say that yesterday for dinner I had a spicy salmon hand roll and an oshiko roll. Healthy right.....
I don't think my body liked the spicy salmon.
Anyway, so this morning I weighed myself - 129.5 pounds - let see if I lose any of that. I think I will, because whenever I go to India, and I eat only vegetarian food I lose weight in shorter periods of time.
I got up and made myself a salt water flush. 32oz of saltwater. The salt water itself was not bad, except I just can't drink 32 oz. So I had 12 oz. of salt water and a cup of laxative tea.
Then at 9:30am I had my first glass of lemonade and I have had 4 of my 6 glasses so far. Six 8oz of lemonade...that is all I am having for the next 10 days.....Me who barely drinks 8oz of water in one day.
So needless to say I have been going to the bathroom quite a bit. I have gone to the bathroom to eliminate 3 times today - which is less than I was expecting. And of there are other sumptoms such as dryness of the mouth.

Weight - 137.5 pounds
Since I got home past midnight, it is now friday.
12:30am - Drank some Smooth Move tea and went to bed.
night - some minor bloating but nothing significant
8:00am - It's smooth move alright, wake up, go, you're done.
8:30am - Running/workout, dump all the food in the fridget that won't last 10 days
10:00am - Drank 32oz of salt water. First half of that all at once, the rest over 15 minutes. It gets a bit unpleasant in the second half, but you can kinda think of it as lime juice - both taste salty.
12:00am - Started drinking the lemonade. Tastes fine but a bit too sweet. About 50-60oz over the next 6 hours. Some of it was lime, most lemon based.
Interestingly, most of the day I didn't feel hungry or think of food. Stomach is occasionally making noises but overall I don't feel weak.

Bread Thingers March 1. 2007
OK so I guess I should respond to the whole Rye thing...
So I sprouted rye and wheat with granola in mind... but I didn't have time to deal with them when they were ready. So instead of letting them go to waste I figured I'd dehydrate them.
So I admit I had no idea how long it would take so I cranked up the timer to 6 hours at 115F, and by morning they were rock hard (that is also the state Taz encountered them in).
A few days later (last night) I got a minute, ground them up in the Ultimate Chopper (it's gotta be good for something, right?) and they turned into flower, sort of.
Since I was going into this with no plan, I just kept adding whatever I could find until it reached a consistency I felt was workable. So here are the ingredients and since I just tossed them in, I have no idea how much I used of each:

Rye & Wheat Flour? February 27. 2007
Over the weekend, we made granola and Akom decided that he wanted...Rye & Wheat Flour? I don't know what he was attempting to do but he sprouted some rye and wheat and then dehydrated them. I am a very visual eater....and trust me, they are visually appalling. I think he may have done something wrong. This is why I don't like raisins...those poor plump grapes come out all wrinkly. Anyway, I think he will try this again, and this time I intend to do a before and after picture.
Also, for all you people who are interested in sprouting, we have found that The Sprout People have the widest selection of sproutable grains, nuts, and leafy greens. We just ordered from them so we don't know the quality of their product yet. Once we do, I'll be sure to post it up. They are a little expensive than other places, but it is very convenient to find anything you want to sprout in one place. If their quality is top notch then I will be willing to pay the extra price.

Granola (Finally) February 24. 2007
Even though I don't eat breakfast anymore, I do miss the taste of granola. I'm sure that down the road this old craving will die off, but for now I wanted to experiment, and we haven't yet attempted any granola recipe.
I stopped eating breakfast a bit before I went raw, because I noticed an interesting thing happening depending on whether I had food in the morning. On the days when I had breakfast (or any food whatsoever before lunch) I would be super hungry and all about food, barely waiting for lunch. I would also feel a bit heavy and sluggish. On days when I would have nothing but water until noon, I was not hungry, felt lighter and definitely more balanced, to the point of having a calm and collected awareness. I won't claim to have more energy, but I enjoy the benefits I mentioned.

Birthday Addendum February 24. 2007
So I thought I'd add a few things regarding the birthday raw stuff.
First of all, the Vanilla Creme is from the Raw Food Real World book... and while we may have changed the recipe slightly, it was spectacular. We overloaded the Vita-Mix (again) while making it, filling it to the top, literally. It was having a hard time chewing through 4" pieces of coconut, and overheated a couple of times. I tossed the base into the freezer for 20 minutes and then we resumed. The problem with the Vita Mix is that the motor is cooled by its own rotation, meaning that the temperature will rise if it is unable to spin as fast as I am asking it to. In the case of the Vanilla Creme I needed to run it slower because the bottom would become a pocket of well-mixed mixture at high speed. I also didn't want to boil (and cook) the stuff. Eventually we simply decided that the consistency was fine enough, so it came out a bit chunky, but I really like it.
We managed to pour the 60 ounces of the stuff into various containers, including an empty Loosa bottle... This works great if you think of the creme as a liquid - which it is, up until it goes into the fridge. Now I'm using a 15" slicing knife to retrieve chunks of creme from the bottom
Did I mention it was well worth the work?

A Raw Birthday February 22. 2007
Yes, I have been a little behind on my posts, and sincere apologies to the people actually reading this.
Akom just turned 30 on Sunday! Yeah! So it was for the most part a raw eating frenzy.
His mother made Rawvioli, salads, a spiced ginger carrot cake, salmon pate, and a cheesecake - which I think is a misnomer. The cheesecake was more like a frozen banana torte.
I don't have recipes for those, but of the items that were made by her, I did enjoy the rawvioli. The outside "dough" was made of turnips. The marinara sauce was also very good. I was not very fond of the other dishes.
I made pancakes - which was supposed to be a 3 day process - but turned into 1.5 days, probably because the house is so dry that the pancakes dried faster than the estimated time.
The pancakes were a modified version of what can be found in Rhio's book Hooked on Raw. Those were a HUGE hit.
So here is what I recommend doing when making these.

Burgers, Cheescake, Appetizers, Oh My! February 13. 2007
This weekend was spent cooking. We made Pate, used in Zuchini rollups, a "cheese" cake and walnut burgers.
Having gained quite a bit of experience in raw cooking, I was prepared for the worst and hoped for the best. I read each recipe carefully so I could plan. Cheesecake needed 20 hours of prep time, pate needed overnight soaking and then dehydrating, and the walnut burgers needed just a short soak and a short dehydrate.
First the cheesecake.
We went and bought a springform cake pan. This I think made things easier. I found the recipe online, http://www.rawguru.com/recipe36.html, which for some reason required a 10 hour waiting period. Having made "cheese" from nuts in the past, I thought that there would be some separation of the whey and the nut mixture, but there was nothing, except a waste of 10 hours. I am going to make this cheescake again without the wait.
Overall, the cheesecake came out quite well. It is not difficult to make, just very time consuming - but so is regular cooked cheesecake. The crust is very delicious and can be used as a base for many other things such as tarts.
My only issues with this recipe were:

Cookies February 10. 2007
So I made the Luscious Lemon cookies. Not too bad. They taste good both dehydrate and not. I did not dehydrate for as long as the recipe called, only until the outside was crunchy and the inside was chewy.
After I blended the ingredients in the VitaMix the top of the mixture was liquidy. However, I did not want to continue because the Vitamix was getting warm. I was starting to wonder, how this concoction was supposed to be edible by hand and un-dehydrated when it was this goopy mess.
Well as I started to get to the bottom of the mixture it became clearer. The bottom of the mixture was pretty solid stuff. Very easily made into lemon squares and not messy to eat by hand. So needless to say, I dehydrated the top of the mixture and left the bottom alone. As I said they are both good, but I prefer the dehydrated ones, b/c I like the crunchy texture. These cookies were gone in 3 days.
Also note that these lemon cookies are VERY lemony. I don't remember right now how much lemon zest was required, but I just used the zest of as many lemons I needed to make lemon juice which I know was less than what the recipe called for.
I would definitely recommend this recipe. It is one of the best dessert recipes we have made.

Breakfast: Granola & Coffee
If you have joined us in the middle of this blog, and you are wondering where the whole raw thing comes into play, just a point of clarification. As I had indicated in my first post - I am not quite ready to "jump" into it. It is a mental thing. So this is how I prepare for it. Akom, is 100% raw and so I prepare foods for him, and try them myself, but I have not made it a meal for myself yet. My intent is to go through the Master Cleanse on March 2 for 10 days, purge my body, and then go on probably a 90% raw diet. We will see.
Today, I am going to experiment. One of the things that Akom and I have found, is that we do not enjoy dehydrated foods. Some "raw experts" have claimed, how wonderful raw food is dehydrated because it concentrates the flavors. We must be doing something wrong, because so far, with the exception of the banana pancakes from Rhio's book Hooked on Raw has not worked out for us.
So I am going to try the Lemon Cookies that Shery Duruz and Naomi Shannon have proposed can be eating both ways and let you know how it goes.
